MINUTES OF THE MEETING 9 JULY, 2008
The meeting was called to order at 6:30 by President Steve Buffat who introduced the visitors. Minutes of the prior meeting were not read since they are available in our newsletter, the Buck and Ball. As no corrections were offered, the minutes for June stand as published. Treasurer Jim Millikin gave the treasurer’s report, showing a balance of $6,499.04 as of today’s date. Gary Brimmer welcomed everyone and gave the membership report. We currently have 124 members in the Civil War Round Table of the Ozarks! Seven folks are lifetime members; Ralph and Geri Thaemlitz and Len Eagleburger have paid dues for twenty five years! Other Round Table chapters would like information concerning ours. Gary thanked everyone for attending, and requested that visitors return. Ted Hillmer of Wilson Creek Battlefield reports that the corn there is waist high! Future Farmers of America from Clever, Missouri harvested last year’s corn and donated $1,500.00 to Wilson Creek Battlefield. Excessive rain, and three foot long road ruts, has caused some of the trails to be closed intermittently. “Yellow school bus fever” reigns, with approximately 8,000 children expected to visit the park, making the call for volunteers loud and clear! The new battle film is being edited, and will eventually be available for purchase. Money to complete this project by Wide Awake Films is still needed. Teresa Hernandez reminded us that member Michael Price will be presenting a talk regarding the history of Wilson Creek at the August meeting. She gave a quick overview of the rest of the year’s scheduled meetings and events. Congressman Roy Blunt will also give a short talk at our August meeting, concerning Civil War Preservation in Missouri, so it is expected that the meeting will run longer than usual. Steve Buffat led discussion concerning making a donation to the Civil War Preservation Trust, and following a unanimous show of hands, we will contribute $250.00 to them. Steve then discussed the Shiloh/Corinth trip scheduled for Friday 19 September leaving from the Wal-Mart parking lot on Independence at 7:00, returning Sunday 21 September in the evening. Reservation forms are available at the meeting and fees need to be paid as soon as possible. We have reserved a Fisk bus for the entire trip and we will be responsible for providing two nights lodging for the driver, and possibly parking fees for the bus. We must pay Fisk $2,500.00 now to reserve the vehicle, (75% of which fee is refundable should we not get enough people and need to cancel the tour). Lodgings will be at the Hampton Inn in Corinth. Tour costs for a single party is $310.00, and costs with two people sharing a room are $435.00. Please be advised that neither the bus, nor the sites we will be visiting are handicapped accessible. The price includes motel, transportation, park entrance fees and two evening meals. This tour will be guided by noted Civil War historian David Hinze, and his fee will be paid by the Civil War Round Table of the Ozarks. The time needed to drive to Corinth is between six and seven hours. This will be “home base” during the weekend. Shiloh is approximately 22 miles away from Corinth. The bus is comfortable, and has technology to enable riders to enjoy films as they travel. The Civil War Round Table of Western Missouri has interested members that may wish to join this tour, so take note that availability is first come first served! We can accommodate 35 people. So if interested, act now! The Elderhostel program went extremely well, and increased our coffers by $1,500.00! Jim Millikin (a.k.a. Ulysses Grant!), the Back Porch Players, Dr. Bill Piston, John Rutherford, Steve Buffat, and others all helped make this program a success! Although this went very well and people would like to do it again next fall, we are planning another Civil War conference here in Springfield for 2009 at that time, so we are considering doing an Elderhostel program in the spring of 2010. On the 14th of November this year, we will hold our annual banquet at the Clarion Hotel (3333 So. Glenstone), (6:30 p.m., $20.00), and will be presenting an award to a member who has done outstanding work for the CWRTO. We very much need someone to commit to six months of managing refreshments for our monthly meetings. We reimburse them for the cost of the snacks, however, need a volunteer(s) to buy and bring the drinks and food items to the Library Center. If we cannot get someone to take on this task, we will no longer be able to provide this service. Note: once this announcement was made, Ted Hillmer generously agreed to accept this responsibility until the end of the year! From the bottoms of our thirsty little hearts, we thank you Ted! Don Akers reminded us to watch the Buck and Ball for information concerning the upcoming anniversary of the Butterfield Stage Overland mail route, and the two day celebration that is planned to commemorate this. Bill Piston conducted the opportunity drawing books for the evening. They were History of the 1st and 2nd Missouri Confederate Brigades, by Bevier, and a new novel in the juvenile fiction genre called The Passage, by James Kilgore. Four copies of magazines from the Leo Huff collection are available this evening. There is also a three- volume unopened hardback set of The Civil War; A Narrative, by Shelby Foote, donated by Jim Scaminaci. Opportunities for this drawing are $5.00 each, and winner will be chosen at August meeting. There was a brief break for refreshments, and then a wonderful variety of show and tell items from various members. Some included the following: historical documents, letters, instructions to militia men, an old English parlor guitar, Civil War soldier’s diaries, buttons and patches, old books, and many interesting personal stories handed down through generations in families of members. Steve Buffat encouraged everyone to research the family history of their own ancestors, to learn just what they may have gone through during the Civil War. People offered many tips on gathering such information. Don Burkemper won The Passage, and Paul Hood took home History of the 1st and 2nd Missouri Confederate Brigades. The magazines went to Clyde Gorley, Don Burkemper, Paul Stickley, and Steve Buffat. The Civil War Round Table brought in $68.00 as a result. Thanks all! Meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m. Carole Petty, Acting Secretary
From the President
Hello again everyone. Where did the summer go? I hope everyone has had a nice summer. As always, it was great to see everyone again at our meeting in July.
For our July meeting, we had our annual “Show and Tell” evening where members of the Round Table told about their Civil War relatives and showed some of their Civil War relics. It was a very interesting evening. Thanks to those that participated. I look forward to next years “Show and Tell” meeting! Our trip to Shiloh TN / Corinth MS with our tour guide, Dave Hinze, September 19-21 is rapidly approaching. We still have seats available. The hotel reservations are going to be made, late this next week. This will assure that we can get rooms at the reduced rate. Again, the trip is $310 single occupancy and $435 double occupancy. The fee includes bus transportation, motel, park entrance fees and 2 evening meals. All other expenses are your responsibility. For more information, please visit our website at http://history.missouristate.edu/wgpiston/cwrt/cwrt.htm. If you are interested in going, please contact me as soon as possible. I can be reached at 417-576-4524 or send me an email at sjbuffat@sbcglobal.net. This trip will be very interesting, educational and a lot of fun. Just a reminder, for our August meeting, we have two excellent speakers that will be talking to us about local Missouri Civil War preservation and history. First, Congressman Roy Blunt will speak to us on Civil War Battlefield Preservation in Missouri. Then, Michael Price will speak to us on Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield Preservation and History. It should be a wonderful meeting and I personally am looking forward to it. Well, I’d better close for now. I look forward to seeing all of you August 13th. Please come and join us. Until then, have a good rest of summer.
