Across the street stood the Mary Campbell house, used as a
Confederate field hospital during the battle. This was the last house
constructed by J.P. Campbell, a founder of Springfield. Surgeon Caleb Winfrey,
who had also attended wounded soldiers at Wilson’s Creek in 1861, treated scores
of wounded men here. He and four other surgeons remained behind, caring for the
wounded after the Confederate forces moved on. Springfield was also the site of
large Federal hospitals where sick and wounded soldiers from campaigns further
south were sent for treatment.
