BUCK AND BALL

DECEMBER 2006

December Program:

General James Blunt:  Tarnished Glory, presented by Robert Collins.

Blunt was Kansas’s only major Civil War-era general. Despite his absence from most Civil War histories, Union general James Gilpatrick Blunt was an immensely successful leader. Not only did he defeat Confederate troops at Fort Wayne, Prairie Grove, and Cane Hill, but he was also instrumental in helping John Brown assist escaped slaves to Canada.

Though his successful military campaigns were well-publicized in contemporary reports and he was viewed as a hero, Blunt’s reputation was later sullied by accusations of corruption and womanizing. Also, he was known for his egotistical tirades.

The talk was enjoyed by everyone for its several humorous events and the scope of the material.

An excellent dinner was topped off with 28 door prizes being awarded. They were generously donated by local businesses. These included lunches, dinners, appetizers, and theater tickets. This month we have Robert Collins presenting Union Gen. James Blunt.

Remember that elections will be held this month and that we need help in several positions that have not been volunteered for. See you on the 13th.

The Union that Created the Brown Water Navy

When we study conflicts throughout history our focus settles on the commanders and soldiers on the frontlines of the struggle.  While this is a critical part of the story we fail to pay attention to what happens behind the frontlines.

This presentation is about four men who came together and gave birth to a new technology, a totally new concept called riverine warfare and how they tipped the balance of power in the western theater in favor of the North.

This new invention was the construction of the very first ironclad ships where the keels were laid near St. Louis in 1861.  The men who produced this dramatic change in the war subjugated their egos, risked their personal reputations and each brought a unique talent to the project to help birth this new naval squadron.

This program wants you to understand the key events occurring in the heartland included ingenuity, vision and talent in order to change the direction of the war.  This is a story about how Americans adapted to new technology in building the ironclad fleet and it ends with the fleet under serious attack at Fort Donelson.  This glimpse behind the lines will demonstrate that a bugle and battle flag does not always accompany the most dramatic moments in history. Sometimes they occur with a wrench, crane and woodworkers tools where history truly changed forever.

BUCK AND BALL

AUGUST  2006

The August  monthly meeting of the Civil War Round Table of the Ozarks will feature noted author and Civil War Round Table member Prof. William Garrett Piston of Missouri State University, who will speak on The Third Louisiana Infantry, CSA (Louisiana Pelicans), in the Wilson's Creek Campaign, 1861 on the eve of the anniversary of that battle.  The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. on Wed. Aug. 9 at The Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell, Springfield, MO.

Letter from the President

I want to thank the fifty members and guests that attended our June meeting on a balmy summer evening. Steve Muckala gave us a very interesting presentation on the role of Minnesota’s soldiers in the Civil War. We, as a group, are fortunate to have so many talented members with stories to tell. Thank you Steve for the “First and Last”.

Our “Show and Tell” July meeting was a total success with many artifacts and numerous member presentations. Even without a July newsletter, we had 55 people attend. I was told that we should do this every year. I agree. We voted on the two proposals I introduced last month. The Round Table vote was passed unanimously to become a Cavalryman member of the Civil War Preservation Trust, and a Copper Level member of the Wilson’s Creek Battlefield Foundation. Each at the $250.00. This vote demonstrates our support for battlefield preservation and restoration. Thank you.

Another bus tour is scheduled. I have booked the Newtonia / Carthage Battlefield tour bus for Saturday, August 12th. We will leave at 8:00 a.m. sharp from the Wal-Mart shopping center on Independence. Cost will be $20.00, and water will be supplied. If we fill the bus, there will be a rebate of $5.00 each. Lunch will be supplied at Newtonia on a donation basis. Call me for your reservation and send checks to the PO Box. Let’s make this one a success.

Jim Scaminaci

The Ozark Piecemaker Quilt Guild has donated a “Log Cabin” design quilt that we will offer in an opportunity drawing at our September meeting. The Quilt Opportunity Committee Chairperson is Carole Petty and the Vice-Chairperson is Dori Scaminaci. Contact one of them for a packet of tickets to sell and help the Round Table raise some money.

This is special to me so I wanted to pass it on to you.

The Springfield Visitors & Tourist Center on Battlefield & Moulder has devoted a full shelf on a rack (near the restroom entrance) for a Civil War display. The CWRTO has the Cannon Poster and the Generic Booklet shared with the Wilson's Creek Battlefield brochures and video's.

I got permission from the Administer, so I returned with Union & Confederate flags and mounted them on the top corner of the rack. This makes the display very attractive and eye catching.

Jim Scaminaci

The Civil War Round Table of the Ozarks will sponsor a Bus Tour of the Newtonia Battlefield sites and Carthage Museum and site on Saturday, August 12th.

The bus will leave from the Wal Mart parking lot on Independance in south Springfield at 8:00 AM promptly. The bus is air conditioned and water will be provided. We should return about 4:00 PM. Lunch is being provided by the Newtonia Historical Group on a donation basis. ($5.00 suggested donation)

The cost is $20.00 per person for a 75% bus subscription. The bus has 49 seats. If we fill the bus with 49 people, we will rebate back $5.00 to everyone for a cost of $15.00.

Please reserve your seat as soon as possible by calling 887-7844, send a check to CWRT, PO Box 3451, Springfield, MO 65808 or email  jamesscaminaci@sbcglobal.net

On July 5th, 1861, Union forces under the command of Colonel Franz Sigel clashed with Missouri State Guard forces north of the town of Carthage.  State Guard forces proved victorious in this contest and drove the Union forces from the field in this early Civil War engagement.

On September 30th, 1862, a Federal force attacked Confederate forces holding the town of Newtonia, Missouri.  The Confederates were able to reinforce their compatriots in Newtonia and force the withdrawal of the attacking Union force.  Being unable to sustain their position the Confederates themselves withdrew after the battle back into Arkansas.

Newtonia was again the scene of action when on October 28, 1864, retreating Confederate forces under General Price halted in the town to rest.  They were immediately set upon by pursuing Union forces and a all day engagement ensued.  At dusk the Confederate forces slipped away to the South.

The Battle for Wilson’s Creek

Since its initial purchase of 37 acres on Bloody Hill, site of the heaviest fighting in the battle, the Foundation has worked to support the park. The goal of the Foundation is to encourage understanding and appreciation of this valuable piece of history, so that future generations can benefit from the educational opportunities and natural beauty it provides.

Equally important to Wilson's Creek is the Foundation's function as the fund raising arm of the park. National Park Service policy prohibits park personnel from being actively involved in fund-raising. Through memberships and other donations, the Foundation works to provide funds for projects that are not covered by the battlefield's federal budget.

Remembering the past as we build for the future….
For the past 50 years this phrase has guided the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield Foundation’s efforts to preserve and protect Wilson's Creek National Battlefield.

Your membership gift will help insure the preservation of this piece of history. With your tax-deductible membership, you will receive the Foundation newsletter, THE BUGLE CALL, offering you information about projects, special programs, and volunteer opportunities at the park, as well as a Foundation window sticker to proudly display on your vehicle or home. You will be invited to special events for Foundation members, like our anniversary membership dinner and programs in the new library education center. However, your greatest benefit will be the knowledge that you are playing a vital role in the future preservation of an important part of our country’s history.

Letter from the President

I am disappointed to say that the trip to Prairie Grove Battlefield has been cancelled as of this morning. With only 25 confirmed reservations, we had no choice. It just seemed that June 10th was a bad time for many reasons.  For those that paid by cash or check, your funds will be returned either at the next meeting or by mail. Jim Millikin will handle those details. Perhaps the next tour to Carthage & Newtonia will do better in August. My thanks to those who tried to go. Perhaps we can try next year to Prairie Grove?

By the way, Civil War Historian magazine is offering us a special subscription opportunity to help us raise funds. See details in this Buck & Ball issue. Copies of this magazine are free and available at the June meeting.

Hal Funk gave a captivating presentation last month on the history of the CSS Shenandoah. I almost did not want him to stop talking and I’m sure others felt the same. As discussed in the meeting, it is surprising that Hollywood has missed this Civil War sea adventure as a possible movie. Thank you very much Hal.

I want to also thank the other gifted speakers we have in our Round Table for their contribution to our success this year. This brings up the next subject.

The July 12th meeting is our Show & Tell night and should be very interesting. Every member can have a chance to tell us about their family ancestry and Civil War history. You can bring artifacts and memorabilia to display and perhaps give us a short talk about them. Start preparing your material and plan to come. Thank you.
