  • The May Meeting
    The May meeting will be at 6:30 p.m.. on Wednesday, May 14, at the Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell, Springfield, MO.  Come get to know us! Visitors and students always free and welcome!
     
    Round Table Member Steve Muckala will speak on Missouri veterans, examining the life and military careers of some of the oldest and youngest Missourians to serve in the war.  A native of northern Minnesota, Muckala lived in Oklahoma for thirty-three and is now living outside Marshfield.  He was president of the Oklahoma City Civil War Round Table for two terms and is now a volunteer at the library at Wilson's Creek.  He had ancestors in the 4th, 5th, 25th, 37th Wisconsin Infantry regiments and the 1st Wisconsin Light Artillery
     
    Important New Book
    James E. McGhee, well known for his pioneering scholarship on the Missouri State Guard, has just published Guide to Missouri Confederate Units, 1861-1865. (Fayetteville: University of Arkansas Press, 2008), 296 pp.  ISBN 1-55728-870-4.  $34.95.  The University of Arkansas Press, which generously donated books to our recent conference, has donated a copy of McGhee's book to the CWRT Ozarks.  It will be one of the raffle items at our next meeting.
     
    Tour the Battle of Westport
    The Civil War Round Table of Western Missouri is sponsoring a bus tour of the Battle of Westport, Saturday,  May 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  For details see their web page at:

  • CWRT Polo Shirts Still Available

For those not aware of the new shirts, they are blue with a grey illustration of a Civil War cannon encircled by "Civil War Round Table of the Ozarks, Springfield, MO."   • The CWRT Ozarks Executive Committee formed a committee to study the possibility of placing a monument and/or interpretive display in Clever, Missouri, in anticipation of the 150th Anniversary of the nearby Battle/Skirmish at Dug Springs on August 2, 1861.  Members/officers who have volunteered to serve on the committee so far are:  Round Table Media Director  Len Eagleburger (Acting-Chair of committee), Missouri State University History Professor and author Dr. Bill Piston , Wilson's Creek National Battlefield Ranger (Hulston Library) Jeffrey Patrick, and Round Table Vice-President Steve Buffat.  David Stokely, of Clever, Mo., will be serving in an advisory position as site selector.  Civil War Round Table President Tom Debo will serve Ex-Officio. The action at Dug Springs was a prelude to the carnage created at the Battle of Wilson's Creek just eight days later on August 10th. Combined casualties totaled 125 killed or wounded.
