Student Opportunities and Services
Enhancing your education in the classroom and beyond
The department of history provides numerous opportunities for you to enhance and extend your education. From student organizations to community engagement, the department encourages you to interact with people in the history field both locally and nationally.
Student organization
Phi Alpha Theta, a local chapter of the national history honor society, provides you with the opportunity to network with professionals, hone your skills and collaborate with peers. Find out how to get involved with Phi Alpha Theta.
Internships
Internships in public history are available at local archives, museums and public institutions. Students have opportunities to learn curation and preservation skills, work in all facets of small museum and historic park management, and interpret and enrich visitor experience at historic parks.
History Day
Each year, the history department sponsors a regional History Day competition for schools located in Christian, Dallas, Douglas, Greene, Hickory, Howell, Laclede, Oregon, Ozark, Polk, Stone, Taney, Webster and Wright counties. As a student, you can help with this competition by serving as judge, assisting with registration and helping to document the event.
Best Essay
Each year the history department sponsors the Best Essay contest, which awards $250 to the best undergraduate and graduate paper. Students, who have been enrolled at Missouri State for at least one semester in the last two years, are invited to submit an essay on a historical topic of their choice.
