Educator Information
Resources
As educators who wish to incorporate the NHD curriculum into your classrooms, many resources are made available to you through National History Day and National History Day in Missouri.
If educators would like copies of the theme book or contest rule book for your classroom or library, please reach out to your regional coordinator to request hard copies of the books.
Teacher Merit Awards
The History Department has collaborated with the Sons of the American Revolution to present two merit awards to teachers who participate in the National History Day competition every year. The George Hummasti High School Teacher of Merit and the William Garrett Piston Middle School Teacher Merit Awards recognize outstanding social science teachers.
Review the eligibility criteria and nomination procedures before you nominate a colleague or yourself for this award.
Applications deadlines will be announced at a later time.
Registration
Teachers are encouraged to register their participation as early as November 1 every year for the Spring competition. Review the guidelines below before registering.
Entry limit
Each teacher may only submit a maximum of six entries (group or individual) in each category, no more than a total of 30 projects per teacher. Unused entry locations in one category may not be transferred to another category. This is to ensure your students’ projects are being evaluated by qualified judges.
Evaluations
Educators can review category evaluations as their students create their projects. The NHD contest rules and evaluations can be a helpful tool for understanding the expectations in each category.
NHD Educators Workshops
These workshops are designed for middle and high school teachers whose students are participating in the NHD contest. This two-hour workshop is held on the second Friday of every November and brings teachers and faculty judges together to discuss the NHD theme and review the characteristics of a strong project.
NHD Internships
The History Department would like to offer the NHD internship every fall semester. This internship is designed to support teachers in implementing the NHD curriculum in their classrooms. NHD interns will be chosen from among history and history secondary education majors who meet certain minimum requirements, such as GPA and classification. They will follow the educator’s guidelines and instructions.
The scope of their responsibilities would include working one-on-one or in teams with students to help them choose a topic that connects well with the theme, develop their arguments and research skills, find primary and secondary sources, structure their process papers, and provide them with thoughtful feedback on their progress.
