International students
International students must demonstrate proficiency in English by scoring 550 or higher on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Please contact International Student Services for more information.
Foreign language proficiency encouraged
All students, especially those specializing in non-U.S. history and those specializing in U.S. history who have a desire to pursue further graduate study at the doctoral level, are encouraged to attain proficiency in a foreign language.
Although there is no formal program requirement for students to demonstrate foreign language proficiency, you may be required by your advisor to demonstrate mastery of a foreign language when that language is necessary to pursue the chosen course of study. Foreign language proficiency will enable satisfactory use of source material or literature in the language in seminar or research work.
A student should demonstrate this mastery of a foreign language through an examination process to be administered by the history department in partnership with the department of languages, cultures and religions.
